My Favourite Film Opening

My favourite film opening of all time would probably be from the film The Breakfast Club 1985, Directed by John Hughes. The film begins with various shots of a 'typical high school', with the iconic song 'Don't You Forget About You' by Simple Minds. I think this simplistic film opening really introduces the film in a great way, as it tells the audience where the film is situated, and the character of some of the students. It also introduces the genre of the film (comedy), as some of the shots are of vandalism and writings such as "I hate Mondays" and "Open this locker and you die!!!" The film opening also shows minor scenes of each of the main characters interacting with their parents, who are dropping them off for detention on Saturday morning. I thought that it was interesting to show how the students react and behave towards their parents, and how some are showed as pressured and somewhat intimidated by them. Overall I believe this opening is perfect for the genre and nature of the film, and it really introduces the audience to the scenery and the main protagonists.

Our Continuity Exercise!

For our continuity exercise we began by getting all of the appropriate equipment we needed, then we proceeded to choose the location that we wanted to film it. As a group, we decided to use Georgia and Romina as the actor, whilst Lizeth and I took control of the camera. In order to get different shots, we shot the same thing from different angles. For example, our first shot was Georgia walking through the door. So we recorded her from behind, and also on the side. From the side, we recorded her body going through the door, and also we got a close up of her hand opening the door.

Through the process of filming our continuity exercise we did, however, endure a few hardships. For instance, after we were relieved to have finally finished filming, as we were editing we realized that the very first shot we filmed did not correspond with the

Then we focused on the shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. We used Romina to play the character of the teacher having a conversation with a student (which was played by Georgia). We got different shots of both the characters saying something to each other, so it looked like a conversation, and in order to follow the 180 degree rule, we kept the positioning of the camera and tripod in the same position. In my opinion, editing was the best part of the whole exercise! I really enjoyed being responsible of cutting and putting certain clips together by myself. The most exciting part was seeing the result of the short film which we shot and I edited. It was really interesting to learn how to edit on the Macs and attempt to make the shots move fluently and look as effortless as we could. I really enjoyed this exercise and am excited to do it again in the future!
